Communication Specialist – Media / Content

Job Summary:

The MPC Communication Specialist is responsible for serving as a company spokesperson and staying apprised of current affairs for the company and top BIG FIVE projects, as well as customer-related events external to the company, to provide engaging online content for all communications channels. Serves as point of contact and communications counsel on various company departments, divisions and initiatives. The Specialist also is responsible for serving as an official media spokesperson, maintaining rotation in the 24-hour media line by responding to media inquiries; writing and developing news/employee communication content for MPC’s intranet homepage, social media and external news site.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Serve as official media spokesperson with the media, developing and maintaining relationships with regional, national and trade media; developing press releases, talking points, media events and conferences

  • Proactively create the most meaningful content for internal and external customers and independently determining the best channels for distribution (i.e., Dialogue, News Center, Target Vision, mississippipower.com, social media)

  • Stay apprised of corporate and business units’ goals and connected to ongoing employee and customer communication to curate engaging stories to share via the most relevant channels

  • Capture content through a variety of mediums, including, but not limited to – written articles, photo/video, Facebook live, apps – and synthesizing, editing and uploading to appropriate platforms

  • Constantly seek new technologies to enhance the company’s storytelling and brand to attract new audiences and increase customer satisfaction

  • Provide excellent communications consultation/client support by developing strategic internal and external communication strategies/messages and tactical implementation on all company issues

  • Must be an exceptional writer with ability to develop online stories, key messages and communications plans while working in a fast-paced environment under tight deadlines

  • Ability to build productive professional relationships with diverse clients, including media, to achieve company’s communication and business goals

  • Knowledge of state and national regulatory processes related to the MPC and the electric utility industry preferred

  • Responds to reporters' inquiries to present the company's position in an honest, timely and effective manner as a part of the 24-hour media line rotation

Job Requirements:

  • Superior knowledge of how the media works

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a media spokesperson or related experience, including implementing strategic communication plans

  • Experience in public relations, writing, communications, marketing, media or related field is required (3-5 years minimum) with demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills and ability to analyze, interpret and effectively communicate complex technical information are necessary for success

  • Strong existing relationships with local and national media a plus

  • Basic photography skills a plus

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, public relations or communications

  • Experience working in the electric utility, preferred

  • Candidate must model company behaviors of customer focus (Unquestionable Trust, Superior Performance, Total Commitment) with strong teamwork skills and demonstrated ability to work with different levels of management and employees
