Southern Company PowerGen Product Quality Control Supervisor in Durham, North Carolina



The primary duties of the Product Quality Control Supervisor-Power Generation at PowerSecure are to oversee the day-to-day operations of the Phase 1 (In Process), Phase 2 (Performance Testing), and Phase 3 (Closeout) Quality Control functions to ensure that the manufactured equipment is compliant with pre-approved standards, designs, and NEC/UL requirements to deliver an overall high quality Generator Product. The individual will be responsible for managing the Level 1, Level 2, Senior PowerGen Product Quality Control Technicians and PowerGen Product Quality Control Team Leads. The individual will be involved with providing and facilitating resources to accomplish Product Development efforts and customer witness tests.

Qualification Requirements

This position manages all Quality Control functions related to power generation systems at the DI Campus. In order, to perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Ensure all Generator Product Quality Control operations are scheduled to maintain the finish dates on the schedule.

  • Monitor and maintain budgeted utilization rates established by leadership.

  • Monitor and maintain labor efficiency.

  • Maintain and monitor individual technician’s Key Performance Indicators.

  • Assist in continuous development and necessary updates of Quality Control Procedures.

  • Maintain and organize functional work areas to foster efficiency.

  • Ensure all employees meet the defined Quality Management System.

  • Review project scopes to ensure all testing criteria is being accomplished and customer requirements are met.

  • Review project scopes to ensure all products are being manufactured per the engineering specifications and the customer’s requirements.

  • Provide performance feedback, training, and reviews to employees on a regular schedule.

  • Ensure that instances of nonconformance have been completed and documented per PowerSecure procedures.

  • Ensure shop orders have been completed in our ERP system and are documented per PowerSecure procedures.

  • Experience working with Switchgear or Generators.

  • Experience working with an ERP system preferred (IFS, SAP, etc.)

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalency (Relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of).

  • Minimum of 2 years experience in a leadership position (experience in a Quality or Test environment is a plus).

  • Minimum 2 years experience Inspecting or Testing in a Manufacturing Environment.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents: mechanical and electrical drawings, work instructions, and written directions.

  • Ability to use a computer to enter information in a database.

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measurement, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

  • Legally authorized to work in the US on an on-going basis without company sponsorship

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Understanding of electrical schematics and ability to interpret mechanical drawings.

  • Administer procedural tests in an organized format for all functions of gear types.

  • Attention to detail.

  • Ability to effectively lead and coordinate group of employees.

  • Ability to communicate and discuss issues with peers, leaders, and customers effectively and professionally.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.

  • Must be proficient in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint software programs.

  • Experience working with an ERP system preferred (IFS, SAP, etc.).

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Will be required to manage PowerGen Product Quality Control Level 1, Level 2, and Senior Technicians.

  • Will be required to manage PowerGen Product Quality Control Team Leads.

  • Cultivate and continuously improve upon efficient safe work practices.

Essential Functions

  • A working understanding NFPA, NEC, UL, and other power generation’s and switchgear controls.

  • Experience with UL (Underwriters Laboratory) listings and classification – UL891 Dead-Front Switchboards, 1008 Transfer Switches, 508A Industrial Control Panels, Medium Voltage Switchgear, 1558 Low-Voltage Enclosed Switchboards, 1973 Batteries for Use in Stationary, Vehicle Auxiliary Power Applications, and 1741 Inverters, Converters, Controllers and Interconnection System Equipment for use with Distributed Energy Resources.

  • Maintain the Product Quality Control schedules.

  • Ensure safe work practices are being trained on and followed.

  • Maintain and monitor Technician Key Performance Indicators.

  • Administer and document results of Technician Procedural Tests.

  • Maintain organized and efficient work environment.

  • Other duties as assigned

Physical Demands

  • Frequently lift and move electrical equipment and materials.

  • Limited travel will be required. Less than 5%

  • Must be able to work in confined spaces and to position oneself in various positions including low to the ground or high up on equipment.

  • Manipulate heavy test equipment and cables.

  • Operate hand and power tools.

  • Able to lift to 50 pounds frequently.

  • Move gear with use of forklift or pallet jack.

Work Environment

  • Work is performed primarily indoors, in a manufacturing environment.

  • Exposed to generator noise, load bank, and other heavy equipment sounds.
