The successful candidate will be responsible for Protection & Control Field Services (P&CFS) activities in the Brunswick area. Safety and Quality are paramount in this position. The successful candidate will be expected to learn and apply switching procedures and safety measures as appropriate. In addition, they must plan and complete projects safely, efficiently, on schedule, and without service interruptions.
The position will be filled as non-exempt position (Level 7 – 9) in the Protection & Control Field Services Technician family. The pay and level will be commensurate with the qualifications, education, and experience of the successful candidate.
Commissioning, testing, maintaining, and troubleshooting protective relaying, controls, and communication equipment associated with substation and transmission power lines
Complete construction projects and substation routines as assigned, ensuring they are completed without service interruptions. This includes managing clearances effectively to meet quality, schedule, and budget targets.
Coordinating substation outages and commissioning activates with multiple internal and external stakeholders.
Develop and use safe and efficient work practices to prevent safety and operational incidents. Follow formal written requirements. Conduct thorough and well documented "job briefings".
Complete required documentation and reports on time. Examples: Time data, Work orders, Work requests, Relay sheets, Field changes on prints, and Operating Instructions.
Develop and share technical expertise in 3-phase power, relaying, SCADA, and substation testing techniques with peers through daily "hands on" work.
Develop and maintain a thorough knowledge of Georgia Power and Southern Company maintenance practices, guidelines, and procedures for substation and line major equipment and relays.
Develop and maintain a high level of technical expertise in substation relaying, fault data, and SCADA equipment and systems.
Look to remove traps and potential failures that may lead to interruptions. Identify the Root Cause to resolve problems.
During emergencies, isolate hazards and damaged equipment safely to restore service as quickly as possible.
Participate in a callout rotation and be available to respond to outages or other abnormal power system conditions outside of their normal work schedule.

General Job Requirements
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- 2-year technical degree in electrical maintenance
2 years equivalent applicable experience (Examples: Substation electrician, technician, wiremen, electrician, etc.) with a 2-year technical degree, or
3 years equivalent applicable experience with a 4-year non-technical degree, or
5 years equivalent applicable experience with no degree, or
Protection & Control Field Services (Field Relaying / Test) experience strongly preferred.
Electric power utility transmission operations, maintenance, or construction experience.
Knowledge Skills & Abilities Required
Good computer and communication skills
Strong math skills
Ability to solve problems and to make sound decisions
Knowledge Skills & Abilities Desired
Knowledge of 3-phase power systems.
Knowledge of AC/DC protection and control schemes.
Experience using test equipment such as voltmeters, ammeters, ohmmeters, communications instruments, and computerized relay test sets.
Hands-on experience in testing, commissioning, and maintaining relaying and control equipment.

Overnight travel is sometimes required.

This is a field job in which the applicant must have the physical ability to operate manual switches and work in a substation environment.
Ability to pass NERC CIP Background check and obtain unescorted NERC CIP Substation Access.
Use email, pager, company radios, etc. to maintain good communication with supervision. Ensure compliance with Southern Company Electronic Communication Policy.
Must live in/near or be willing to relocate within reasonable distance to the Brunswick area.
