Data Analyst


The purpose of the data analyst position is to identify and conduct analytical activities to support all Southern Company Gas’ local distribution companies including data analysis, modeling, KPI reporting, market segmentation and forecasting to assist sales, marketing, national accounts and other business units with project/program planning and strategic decision-making.

The successful applicant must be able to pull from multiple sources and analyze large data sets to provide analysis for both regular business reporting and ad hoc projects and analyses. The ideal candidate will have a robust attention to detail and will be able to work creatively and adaptively with data to identify trends, insights and/or solutions. Candidate must be able to build strong relationships with both internal and external clients.

  • Prepare, develop and manage recurring monthly reports to support sales, marketing and national accounts teams.

  • Support management in identifying new customers, markets and applications for natural gas and assess the business impact of those implications.

  • Complete ad hoc requests for research, analysis, and reporting by pulling from diverse internal and external data sources, implementing the appropriate method of analysis and offering relevant insights.

  • Customer segmentation to determine optimum product offerings, messaging, channels and programs to achieve highest ROI.

  • Apply industry, marketing, business and analytical knowledge to support business decisions.

  • Track and report on marketing program effectiveness, including response rates, conversion rates and ROI.

  • Compile, maintain, and track data from external sources to include energy prices, energy cost comparisons, as well as a variety of economic indicators.

  • Develop and utilize data models to detect key market indicators that impact our markets and business.

  • Identify, research and document significant national account activities across our markets to include expansions, major renovation projects or closures that would impact our business or offer new opportunities.

  • Support the National Account team by providing service to both internal and external clients and conducting analysis. Establish partnerships to ensure the highest level of service for national accounts.

  • Participate in special projects, as requested.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skill & Abilities


  • 2 years of experience in an analytical role.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Engineering, Finance, Economics, Statistics or related field.

  • Proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint and other Microsoft Office applications is required. (Candidates will need to demonstrate their analytical skills and experience.).

  • Ability to multitask and prioritize assignments along with good organization and time management skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills.

  • Strong attention to detail.

  • Demonstrated ability to interface with all levels in the organization.

  • Ability to establish and maintain relationships with customers.

  • Ability to take direction.


  • 3-4 years of experience in market research, statistics, business or related field.

  • Experience working for or with natural gas utilities.

  • Experience with data visualization software (Tableau, Power BI, etc.)

  • General business knowledge of Southern Company GAS marketing, sales, and customer service policies and practices.
