The Billing Analyst will assist with day to day operational and billing support and processes including report analysis and error resolution of existing product and service offerings and product billing processes and systems. This person will assist with documenting and maintaining standard operating procedures (SOP’s) for established and new operational and billing requirements and processes. Various contract and billing factors are maintained by this position. This person will assist with system testing for both new product launches and continual ongoing programming changes and enhancements. This person will interact with various support departments including Accounting, Collections, Marketing, IT, and the Call Center (through Client Relations Department) coordinating any support needed from or for these departments as it relates to daily operations and billing functions. This person will also assist with ad hoc projects and the analysis of various operational and billing hurdles as they arise. The management and development of departmental metrics may also be part of this role. Other duties as assigned.

Job Responsibilities & Accountabilities by Competency

Functional Expertise:

Analyze the output of various daily/weekly/monthly operations and billing control exception reports, troubleshoot issues and define the action plan to determine the scope of the problem, how to fix the problem, and how to prevent it from happening in the future (exception reports typically relate to contract enrollments, cancellations, renewals, billings, adjustments, etc. of existing product and service offerings).

Criticality :

  • Become Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the energy platform.

  • Maintain various contract and billing factors

  • Assists in testing and implementation of system enhancement projects for billing and operations.

  • Tests system to determine the effect changes may have had on application functionality.

  • Initiates process and system improvement.

  • Supports billing and operations for all energy markets as needed.

  • Perform monthly / quarterly SOX controls

  • Perform daily and monthly support tasks for markets including usage exception processing, billing, and system updates.

  • Assist in supporting billing and back office operations for all other markets as needed.

  • Performs daily bill reviews for new and expanded markets.

  • Monitors daily billing processes and investigates exceptions for new and expanded markets.

  • Reviews, researches, and resolves exceptions from daily, weekly, and monthly monitoring queries.

  • Performs regular invoice reconciliation for LDCs (Local Distribution Company) in new and expanded markets.

  • Resolves LDC transaction exceptions for all markets.

  • Updates and validates monthly pricing for LDCs in all markets

  • Supports billing and back office operations on a going-forward basis once implemented.

  • Implements process and system improvements related to billing exceptions

  • Performs regular reporting and ad hoc queries or data requests for internal SouthStar business owners including marketing and accounting departments.

  • Supports the defect process with account research and clean up as needed.

  • Supports billing and back office operations for all markets.

Business Acumen:

  • Document and maintain policies and standard operating procedures (SOP) for established and new operational and billing requirements and processes

  • Gathers and analyzes data from multiple sources to identify and implement new processes and process improvements in billing and operations.

  • Identifies root causes for billing and operational exceptions and works to correct and prevent future occurrences.

Engagement :

  • Work with other departments and team members

  • Work with all departments seeking system assistance, enhancements, data requests and troubleshooting.

Driving Results:

  • Creates process improvements and enhancements, providing data and other support documentation that justifies the changes.

  • Identify root cause for billing exceptions and implement associated process and system improvements.

  • Gather and analyze data from multiple sources in order to identify and implement process improvements for IL market and back office operations.

  • Assist in supporting any and/or all other Market implementations and acquisitions as needed.


Education, Certifications/Licenses:


  • Bachelor’s degree or 5 equivalent work experience

Related Work Experience:

Required :

  • 3-6 years of experience in consumer services or business to consumer (B2C)

Preferred :

  • Retail utility experience

  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Project, Visio, and Access.

  • Familiarity with SQL

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • This position requires occasional travel (0-10%). The incumbent may be required to travel on occasion. Trips may require air travel and/or overnight stay away from home for one or more nights.
