Please Note : This is a hybrid role, and the successful candidate is expected to work from the Southern Company Corporate Headquarters in Atlanta a minimum of 4 days per week.

JOB SUMMARY:

The accountant position is an integral part of a team that performs all financial accounting for Southern Power Company, an SEC registrant. This position is within the Property, Materials, and Lease Accounting Department, reporting to a team leader, and is in Atlanta, Georgia. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing all accounting and reporting tasks related to materials and supplies, property insurance, and long-term service agreements for maintenance at the company’s natural gas fired generating facilities. This position ensures the tasks are completed in accordance with GAAP, FERC, and Sarbanes-Oxley requirements. In addition, this position will provide support for Southern Power Company’s various internal management, partnership, and SEC reporting requirements.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare journal entries and supporting schedules to ensure accurate and timely completion of monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial close processes in accordance with U.S. GAAP

  • Perform detailed account reconciliations, investigate, and resolve any reconciling differences

  • Assist in the annual financial statement audits, SEC filings, and tax filings by preparing and providing supporting workpapers, schedules, and documentation as requested

  • Ensure that all internal controls surrounding responsibilities are adequate and functioning effectively to achieve their objectives

  • Provide management with detailed actual to budget or actual to actual variance explanations as requested

  • Perform special projects, analysis, and other duties assigned by management to support business needs

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field is required

  • Advanced degree in accounting or related field is a plus

  • CPA license (or equivalent) is a plus.

Experience, Knowledge, and Skills:

  • Two or more years of experience in accounting is required

  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) is required

  • Experience in preparing journal entries and account reconciliations is required

  • Experience in performing analysis on financial transactions and results is required

  • Knowledge of Sarbanes-Oxley 404 compliance requirements is required

  • Experience using Oracle Cloud ERP accounting software is highly desirable

  • Experience using Maximo Enterprise Asset Management software is a plus

  • Knowledge of the utility industry and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) System of Accounts is a plus

  • Positive, professional attitude with strong interpersonal and communication skills is required

  • Initiative-taking working style and critical thinking skills are required

  • Strong organizational skills with ability to manage multiple projects and competing deadlines is required

  • Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Excel including experience with formulas (SUM, AVERAGE, VLOOKUP, XLOOKUP, SUMIF, etc.), pivot tables, and data analysis is highly desirable
