JOB SUMMARY

This posting is for multiple groups within the P&CFS job family. These jobs are in the Transmission Maintenance Centers (Test Engineer), Protective Communications Support (Carrier), SIA (Substation Integration & Automation), and PQA (Panel Quality Assurance) groups. These positions will be filled as Non-Exempt positions in the Protection & Control Field Services Engineer/Technician family, with the pay and level commensurate with the qualifications, education, and experience of the successful candidate.

The successful candidate will be responsible for Protection & Control (P&C) field services (Test Engineering) activities in their respective area. Safety and Quality are paramount in this position. The successful candidate will be expected to learn and apply switching procedures and safety measures as appropriate. In addition, he/she must plan and complete projects safely, efficiently, on schedule, and without service interruptions.

General Job Requirements

Education Requirements

  • 4-year Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, or

  • 4-year BS Degree in Engineering Technology, or

  • Professional Engineer License Preferred, or

  • 2-year technical degree in electrical maintenance, or

  • 4-years BS Degree in Computer Programing or equivalent (SIA Group)

  • Equivalent applicable experience (Examples: Substation electrician, technician, wiremen, electrician, etc.)

Experience Desired

  • P&C Field Services (Test Engineering) experience strongly preferred.

  • Electric power utility transmission operations, maintenance, or construction experience.

  • Related substation experience (P&C Applications, Design, Construction, Major Equipment, Project Management, etc.)

  • This is a field job in which the applicant must have the physical ability to operate manual switches and work in a substation environment.

GROUP 1:

PCFS Engineer/Technician – TMC (Transmission Maintenance Center)

  • Knowledge of 3-phase power systems.

  • Knowledge of AC/DC protection and control schemes.

  • Experience using test equipment such as voltmeters, ammeters, ohmmeters, communications instruments, and computerized relay test sets.

  • Hands-on experience in testing, commissioning, and maintaining relaying and control equipment.

  • Basic understanding of fault analysis

Job Responsibilities

  • Commissioning, testing, maintaining, and troubleshooting protective relaying, controls, and communication equipment associated with substation and transmission power lines Complete construction projects and substation routines as assigned, ensuring they are completed without service interruptions. This includes managing clearances effectively to meet quality, schedule, and budget targets.

  • Coordinating substation outages and commissioning activates with multiple internal and external stakeholders Handle trouble calls as needed.

  • Develop and use safe and efficient work practices to prevent safety and operational incidents. Follow formal written requirements. Conduct thorough and well documented "job briefings".

  • Develop and share technical expertise in 3-phase power, relaying, SCADA, and substation testing techniques with other engineers through daily "hands on" work.

  • Look to remove traps and potential failures that may lead to interruptions. Identify the Root Cause to resolve problems.

  • During emergencies, isolate hazards and damaged equipment safely to restore service as quickly as possible.

  • Successful candidate shall participate in a callout rotation and be available to respond to outages or other abnormal power system conditions outside of their normal work schedule.

GROUP 2:

PCFS Engineer/Technician – Protective Communications Support (Carrier)

Potential Locations: Albany, Athens, Atlanta Road (Marietta), Augusta, Brunswick, Columbus, Conyers, Forest Park, Macon, Oakley (Union City), Ponce (Atlanta – near Virginia Avenue), Rome, Statesboro, Savannah, Valdosta, Vidalia, GA.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of 3-phase power systems.

  • Knowledge of AC/DC protection and control schemes.

  • Good computer and communication skills.

  • Strong math skills.

  • Ability to solve problems and to make sound decisions.

  • Basic pilot relaying understanding.

  • Experience using test equipment such as voltmeters, ammeters, ohmmeters, communications instruments, and computerized relay test sets.

Experience Desired

  • Significant Transmission Line Relaying background.

  • Pilot relaying commissioning/trouble shooting skills.

  • Hands-on experience in testing, commissioning, and maintaining relaying and control equipment.

  • Basic understanding of Fault Data equipment.

Job Responsibilities

  • Majority of time will be spent on commissioning new Pilot relaying equipment and performing preventive/corrective maintenance on existing pilot equipment.

  • Secondary functions include Fault Data Equipment Support.

  • Support P&C Field Services personnel on Pilot relaying installation, maintenance, & troubleshooting.

  • Investigate and resolve Pilot relaying misoperations.

  • Develop procedures, modifications, and guidelines on Pilot relaying equipment.

  • Write test procedures and automated relay test plans for pilot relaying.

  • Provide emergency support to P&C Field Services personnel for spare equipment and parts.

  • Effectively interface with other departments, Operating Companies, manufacturers & vendors.

  • Troubleshoot and Commission Fault Data Equipment in assigned area.

  • Evaluate new test equipment and new pilot relaying equipment.

  • Develop and present formal and informal (OJT - on-the-job) training to the P&C Field Services personnel on pilot relaying equipment.

  • Serve on system committees.

GROUP 3:

PCFS Engineer/Technian – SIA (Substation Integration & Automation)

Potential Locations: Albany, Athens, Atlanta Road (Marietta), Augusta, Brunswick, Columbus, Conyers, Forest Park, Macon, Oakley (Union City), Ponce (Atlanta – Near Virginia Avenue), Rome, Statesboro, Savannah, Valdosta, Vidalia, GA.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (Required)

  • Strong computer skills with some experience in programing.

  • Good communication skills.

  • Basic knowledge of computer networks and networking equipment

  • Strong planning, organizing, and scheduling skills.

Experience Desired

  • Three years field experience in testing, commissioning, and maintenance of transmission and distribution substation protection and control systems is preferred.

  • Experience in the installation, configuration, testing, and maintenance of SEL Communication Processors using Windows/Subnet or SEL-RTAC System Software is preferred.

  • Hands-on experience with a wide variety of substation IEDs: meters, relays, RTUs, etc is preferred.

  • Knowledge of communication protocols: SEL protocols, DNP3, Modbus, TCP/IP

  • Knowledge of physical communication media: EIA-232, EIA-485, Ethernet, etc.

Job Responsibilities

  • Perform installation and maintenance of SIA systems in Georgia Power substations.

  • Provide technical support for SCADA RTU’s for P&C Field Services.

  • Work with P&CFS Field personnel and Real Time Systems to coordinate the commissioning of SIA equipment to meet project schedules.

  • Participate in Georgia Power, Southern Company, and industry SIA-related project teams and committees.

  • Assist the GPC SIA Support group in researching and evaluating new SIA technologies.

  • Develop and present formal and informal (OJT - on-the-job) training to the P&C Field Services personnel on SIA & SCADA equipment.

  • Successful candidate shall participate in a callout rotation and be available to respond to outages or other abnormal power system conditions outside of their normal work schedule.

GROUP 4:

PCFS Engineer/Technician – PQA (Panel Quality Assurance)
